Item: Card Case Description: Crystal Palace
Hallmark: Birmingham 1850/51 by Edward Smith Dimensions: 96mm x 69mm rectangular; 65g weight
Comments: A wonderfully engraved card castle
from the "castle top" series. The finely detailed engraved scene
of the Crystal Palace is set amidst a honeycomb effect of engine turned
engraving. The sides of the case are shaped and engraved to the borders
with scrolls and curlicues. There is a vacant cartouche to the hinged
cover. Superb condition throughout with very crisp engraving.
The year this case was made (1850/1) was the year of The
Great Exhibition for which the Crystal Palace was constructed. The Great
Exhibition was largely organised by Prince Albert (husband to Queen
Victoria) to demonstrate the prowess of British manufacturing. The Palace
itself was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton and was largely constructed of
cast iron and glass. For the purposes of the exhibition it was sited in
Hyde Park, but was later moved to Sydenham before being destroyed by a
fire in 1936.
