Item: Whistle Description: Engraved
silver whistle with mother-of-pearl handle Hallmark: Birmingham
1822 by Joseph Taylor Dimensions: 107mm length
Comments: A very beautiful and rare Georgian child's
whistle with all over engraving and a mother of pearl handle/teether
stick. The whistle works too! A full set of clear hallmarks are located
around the collar holding the handle and a second IT maker's mark is to be
found on the opposite side of the whistle aperture.
The
mother of pearl is entirely original to the piece. This form of whistle
and very similar rattles were produced by Joseph Taylor and were the
earliest forms to utilise mother of pearl as an alternative to coral.
One of the main purpose of the latter was as an amulet to protect the
child from evil spirits, however by the early 19th Century, these fears
were largely dismissed.
