Item: Child's Mug Description: Waisted
with scroll handle and gilt interior: Engraved with inscription
relating to Sir Joseph Paxton London 1853 by D&C Houle
Dimensions: 92mm tall; 97mm diameter at base;
203g weight
Comments: A superb quality child's mug in fine
condition with the added bonus of a historically interesting engraved inscription:
"To J.F. St. BARBE FROM HIS GODFATHER Sir Joseph Paxton Dec 20th
1854". Paxton would have bought this mug to celebrate the Christening of his Godson.
The mug has a lovely solid weight with floral engraved
dimples around the centre and a scroll border to the skirt. The gilding to
the inside is entirely original and the whole has a beautiful colour.
Sir Joseph Paxton (1803-65) took the prestigious position
of Head Gardener at Chatsworth House (home to the Duke of Devonshire and
one of the finest landscape gardens of the time)) at the age of twenty.
Whilst at Chatsworth he developed an interest in glass houses that would
ultimately lead him to fame. He most well known design was that of The Crystal Palace used
for the Great Exhibition in 1851. Plenty more information about
Paxton can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Paxton
