Antique Silver

Item: Rattle Description: Gilt with whistle, coral and bells Hallmark: London 1839 by Mary Chawner Dimensions: 134mm long; 76g weight

Comments: A fine and rare example of a good sized rattle by this lady silversmith. This rattle is in unusually good condition (they tend to have some condition issues) and has a full complement of six bells on a single tier. The whistle is in working order and the original coral is full length. The rattle bears hallmarks to the collar holding the teether section and a maker's mark to the reverse side of the whistle.

The presence of a coral teether was dual purpose: for soothing aching teeth and spiritual properties said to ward away evil.
