Item: Boatswain's Call Description: Large with
crowned anchor buoy Hallmark: Exeter
circa 1797 by William Welch (of Plymouth Dock) Dimensions: 134mm long;
26g weight
Comments: An extremely rare Georgian silver
boatswain's call (a.k.a. bosun whistle) that was appropriately made in
Plymouth Dock and hallmarked in the nearest assay office at Exeter. The
keel of this larger than average whistle is engraved with a simple design
in typically naive provincial fashion. The buoy bears the crowned
anchor of the Royal Navy to both sides. Excellent condition and it
whistles too!
Historically the boatswain's call was used to pass commands
to the crew when the voice could not be heard over the sounds of the sea.
Because of its high pitch, it could be heard over the activities of the crew
and bad weather.
