Button Claret Label, 1794

Details

A simple, but effect design and yet very few of these button or disc shaped labels were produced. This particular silver wine label is named "CLARET" to the centre together with an engraved lion rampant crowned crest. This rare example was made by the son of the more famous Susanna Barker (this maker's mark is scarce as Robert Barker was only in production for a couple of years) and from extant examples of this rare form it would seem that in those few productive years he was the main proponent. The label is in excellent condition with the chain hanging from two retainer rings to the reverse side.

See figure 236 in "Wine Labels: 1730-2003" for a similar button- shaped label for MARSALA".
