Item: Spoon Description: Trefid with
decorated rattail Hallmark: London
circa 1682 by 'NC' Dimensions: 196 mm long, 60g weight
Comments: A very rare London-made, Charles II
period, trefid with crisp decorated rattail. It bears a hallmarking oddity
in that it is stamped twice with the lion passant and the date letter has
been omitted (presumably the wrong punch was picked up at the assay office
- a Friday afternoon job?). The hallmarks are all clear with an especially
clear maker's mark. This is a distinctive conjoined script "NC" within a double
circle.
The
spoon has a hefty weight and good feel to it. There is a set of
contemporary to manufacture, engraved betrothal initials to the reverse
terminal.
