Item: Spoon Description: Puritan Hallmark: London 1663 by John King
Dimensions: 190mm long; 55 grams Comments: A
great example of the very scarce Puritan form of spoon. The puritan spoon is
called due to its' simple form and with its' flat stem was the precursor to
the later trefid pattern. This spoon dates from the early years after the
Restoration and is in lovely condition with a great patina. It has a good
hefty weight in the hand and retains a full bowl. The reverse terminal bears
contemporary scratch engraved initials "IH". The bowl mark is in
good order and the stem hallmarks are okay with a clear example of the
maker's mark and a legible date letter (gothic "F"). The lion
passant (furthest mark from the bowl) is visible but very worn. This spoon
deserves to be sold at a much higher price, however the worn condition of
the lion passant has lead us to offer it for a very competitive price.
