Item: Spoon Description: Slip-top Hallmark: London
1586 by Patrick Brue Dimensions: 158mm long; 35 grams
Comments: A fine example of an
Elizabethan slip top spoon by one of the most important spoon makers of the
period. This slip spoon has a very good set of hallmarks and in typical
slip top fashion the date letter is located towards the stem end (to
prevent the addition of a seal or apostle terminal by rogue spoonmakers).
The spoon is in good order with some minor
pitting (possibly from burial) around the edge of the bowl. The bowl
retains most of its’ original shape although the leading edge has some
very minor wear The maker's mark is a mullet over annulet" which has
been attributed to Patrick Brue by Piers Percival.
