Item: Spoon Description: Apostle Hallmark: Bridgwater
circa 1660 by Christopher Roberts Dimensions: 188mm long; 55 grams Comments: An
excellent example of an early Charles II period apostle spoon. This West
Country spoon has a very good weight and maintains its' original full bowl.
The cast apostle is gilt and bears contemporary to manufacture betrothal
initials to the nimbus.
There are two marks to the the reverse of the stem. One depicts a
chalice surrounded by four mullets within a heart-shaped punch. Tim Kent
on page 129 of "West Country Silver Spoons & Their Makers"
suggests that Christopher Roberts may well be the owner of this mark. The
second mark and the bowl mark are a "CR" surrounded by mullets -
this adds further credence to the attribution.
A very similar apostle spoon by the same maker was
previously sold by us and can be seen by clicking
this link.
