Antique Silver Spoons

Item:  Table Spoon Description: Hanoverian rat-tail Hallmark: London 1709 by Mary Mathew Dimensions: 200mm long, 58g weight

Comments: An excellent early example of a Britannia Standard Rattail spoon. The date letter and maker's mark are very clear. There is no Britannia mark and no signs that one was ever stamped (probably an oversight at Goldsmith's Hall), the lion's head erased mark is present. The lady maker's mark (M.A over a duck and under a figure) is within a widow's lozenge and was entered as she took over the business of her deceased husband William Mathew in 1707.
