Item: Spoon Description: Seal-top Hallmark: Circa
1630-50 Dimensions: 174mm long, 52g weight
Comments: A lovely quality seal top spoon in
excellent condition. The spoon has three clear hallmarks to the reverse
terminal (polyfoil struck twice and reversed "R") and a further
crisp polyfoil mark to the bowl. The marks are unattributed, however the
presence of a distinctive Salisbury Group B cast seal indicates an origin
in the vicinity of Salisbury from the early/mid 17th Century (see Kent
"Salisbury Silver & It's Makers 1550-1700" pages 16-18 for
further information). The seal is dot pricked "W.C".
Provenance: The How of Edinburgh Sale on October
30th 2007.
How of Edinburgh were the leading experts in early spoons.
They were retailing from the early 1930's onwards and produced the
groundbreaking work "English & Scottish Silver Spoons and
Pre-Elizabethan Hallmarks" in the 1950's.
