Antique Silver

Item: Spoon Description: Dog-nose; beaded rat-tail Hallmark: London 1701 by Benjamin Watts Dimensions: 212mm long, 40g weight

Comments: A very rare transitional dog nose spoon with the stem profile (square) and bowl shape of the earlier trefid spoon. The beaded rattail is also a continuation of the popular late 17th Century form. The hallmarks are excellent with a particularly crisp date letter and lion's head erased. Slightly later dated dot-pricked initials can be found to the terminal. N.B. the line showing adjacent to the beaded rattail in the close-up is a scratch not a crack!
