Item: Spoon Description: Engraved Trefid
Hallmark: London 1700 by John Ladyman Dimensions: 195mm long,
38g weight
Comments: An extremely rare table spoon sized
Britannia Standard trefid spoon with original all over engraved
decoration. The reverse of the bowl has engraved acanthus leaves either
side of the rattail and the front terminal has a vacant cartouche.
Within
the engraving to the reverse terminal is a coat of arms - purportedly for
"Forster impaling Winch for the marriage of Sir Humphrey Forster,
Baronet of Aldermaston, Berkshire to Judith, daughter of Sir Humphrey
Winch, Baronet of Haines Bedfordshire". Both Humphrey's were Members
of Parliament; Winch for Great Marlow in Buckinghamshire (1680-86) and
Forster for Berkshire (1685-1701). Their respective homes were
approximately 30 miles apart.
Although not especially heavy and there is no thick rim to
the front of the bowl, the spoon is in very good all round condition.
