Antique Silver

Item:  Spoon Description: Trefid with reeded rattail Hallmark: Wells c1700 by Samuel Walter Dimensions: 186 mm long, 59 g weight

Comments: A very rare West Country trefid spoon from the city of Wells. This spoon has a good weight and feeling of quality that is often missing from other provincial spoons of the period. It has a wide trefid terminal and there are no engravings nor evidence of there ever having had been. The bowl is full size with some very minor wear from use to the leading edge and there is a little pitting to the reverse of the bowl (see photo).

The spoon is struck twice with the "SW" over a star maker's mark of Samuel Walter. This mark and a brief biography can be seen in "West Country Silver Spoons & their Marks 1550-1750" by Tim Kent page 141( figure M.163).
