Antique Silver Spoons

 

 

Item:  Spoon Description: Seal Top Hallmark: London 1561 maker's mark a campanula Dimensions:  154 mm long, 36g weight

Comments: A fine early Elizabethan spoon with very clear hallmarks and in very good condition. The bowl retains it's shape and there are small remnants of gilding to the seal terminal.

The Leopard's head crowned mark within the bowl is very clear. To the reverse of the stem the date letter and lion passant marks are very good with just a small amount of wear to the maker's device mark. This mark was described in Jackson's as a "campanula". The mark is shown on page 96 (3rd entry). It is also illustrated in "London Silver Spoonmakers 1550 to 1697" by Tim Kent on page 8 figure 7.
