Item: Spoon Description: Seal Top Hallmark: London
1602 by Noah Farmer Dimensions: 162 mm long, 36g weight
Comments: A rare Elizabethan seal top spoon with
an excellent set of hallmarks showing a clear date letter and maker's
device mark. The bowl of this spoon generally retains it's fig-shape,
however it is less deep than typical and has a thin leading edge.
The device mark is "a dove holding an olive
branch" and this mark is illustrated in Jackson's on page 105 top
entry. The mark has been attributed by Percival (Finial 11/05) to Noah
Farmer and following his death in 1600 to his widow or his apprentice
Barnabas Turville.
Provenance: Formerly in the collection of the Marquis of
Breadalbane. Spoons formerly in this famous collection are stamped with
the "Breadalbane" facsimile.
