Item: Spoon Description: Trefid
Hallmark: Devizes circa 1690 by Ralph Good Dimensions: 205mm; 57grams Comments: An
excellent quality Wiltshire made trefid spoon with a really hefty feel in
the hand. The quality of the spoon is matched by the presence of the bold
rattail to the underside of the bowl, not often seen on provincial
examples, and a further sign that this spoon was equal to its' London made
contemporaries.
The spoon retains its' full bowl shape and bears
dot-pricked "WS" baptismal initials to the reverse terminal. The
marks are excellent: "RG" struck twice and "S" over
"V" over "2D". The former relates to Ralph Good I of
Devizes - see plate M.53 in West Country Silver Spoons & Their Makers
1550-1750" by Tim Kent. The second mark may possibly refer the
original value of the silver, i.e. 5 (V) shillings and 2 pennies.
