Item: Spoon Description: Seal-top Hallmark: Lichfield
circa 1590 by Thomas Gladwin & John Utting Dimensions: 159mm; 42 grams Comments:
A superb and very rare example of an early spoon from the English
Midlands. This late Elizabethan spoon has a typical squat, fluted, hexagonal
seal for the period bearing later engraved initials.
The makers mark "G" over "IV" is struck
clearly to the bowl and twice to the reverse of the stem. The mark is most
likely attributable to Gladwin and Utting of Lichfield.
The spoon is in excellent all around condition with a full
shape bowl (just a touch sharp at the leading edge) and a fine patina. The
seal is in especially crisp condition and is as good an example of an
Elizabethan squat seal as you are likely to find.
