Item: Spoon Description: Seal-top Hallmark: West Country circa 1653 by DC
Dimensions: 179mm; 62grams Comments: A
very fine Commonwealth period seal top spoon. This is a truly fantastic
quality spoon with a large and beautifully detailed seal. It has a good
hefty weight and a large unworn bowl. The patina is untouched and there are
three very clear "DC" hallmarks to the reverse stem. Original
dated baptismal dot pricked initials can be found to the reverse of the bowl
and the date of 1653 is almost certainly contemporary to the age of the
spoon.
The "DC" marks are illustrated on page 324 of
Jacksons (Pickford edition) where they are attributed to the West Country. A
fine spoon worthy of further research.
