Antique Silver Spoons

MARKS OF LONDON GOLDSMITHS AND SILVERSMITHS 1697 –1837

 by John P Fallon

Although not a comprehensive book of the London makers during the reigns of the Hanoverian monarchs, this book does include most of the major silversmiths. The makers are listed alphabetically with illustrations of all their marks and associated dates. For each silversmith there is a brief resume, which generally includes a family history, partnerships/apprenticeships, workshop addresses and relevant dates. There is a useful index of the makers’ marks, plus an interesting 30-page addendum including the wills of nine silversmiths and the family histories of four.

It is a good book for those who want to know more than just the name of the maker for a particular spoon. However, it has been superseded by the more comprehensive (and more expensive) book by Grimwade.
