Item: Toast Rack Description: Six
slices on ball feet with shell and scroll handle Hallmark: Birmingham
1824 by Matthew Boulton Dimensions: 6.4"
(161mm) long x 4.6" (115mm) wide x 5.8" (145mm) high; 305
grams (9.8 tr. oz.)
Comments: This
large toastrack piece is typical of Boulton's silver and the scroll and shell handle
is one of his trademark Regency designs. The toastrack will hold six
thick slices and would equally well serve as a letter rack. It stands on
four ball feet and bears a very small engraved crest of a bird at rest.
Matthew
Boulton was an important and famous Birmingham industrialist. He was
instrumental in the development of the steam engine with James Watt. He
was also the main protaganist in setting up the Birmingham Assay Office in
1773. His Soho Manufactury was a huge factory and silver wares were made
for the rich and famous as well as being aimed at the more mass market.
Boulton
silver is becoming more and more scarce and this is a fine example of his
work.
