1887 by William & George Sissons Dimensions: 30cm

Comments: This is an outstanding quality
Victorian Claret Jug in entirely original and perfect condition.
The glass is quite stunning, with a beautiful and intricately cut
design of hob-nails and flower heads. The silver is equally superb with a
mixture of embossed flowers, scrolls and flutes. The jug is parcel-gilt
(i.e. partially gold-plated/wash) with the inner rim and spout showing the
gold to best effect. There is a vacant cartouche (no erasures) to
both sides. The inside of the hinged cover is gilt (gold-wash), and
the top is centred by a flower-head. There is an openwork thumb-piece
for opening the cover. The "C"-shaped handle has a design of
four ribbons of beading down the length of the handle to aid with
grip and a thumb-rest in the form of a mythical beast's head. For
additional strength, found only on the best quality claret jugs, the
handle is attached to a shaped silver base; this is chased with stylized
bell-flowers and leaves.
