Item: Salt Pots (set of four) Description: Cauldron
form on three hoof feet with gadroon rims and gilt interiors Hallmark: London
1752 by J Wood Dimensions: 2.5" (62mm) diameter x 1.5"
(38mm) high; 212 grams (6.8 tr. oz.) weight
Comments: It is rare to find a set of four
18th Century salt pots in such fine condition. Each salt pot is a good
size with a gilt (gold-wash) interior to protect the silver from the
corrosive effects of salt. The hallmarks are mostly legible, which is
unusual in itself as they are prone to wear. The maker's of this set were
the Wood family of silversmiths that were 18th Century specialists in the
production of top quality casters and salts. The underside of each foot
bears an initial of the original owner - the three initials
represent the forenames and surname of man and wife, usually representing
a wedding gift.
