Comments: This
outstanding
quality Georgian Classical style basket stands on a
pedestal foot and retains it's original swing handle. An applied bead
mount can be found around the top rim and this is repeated around the foot
and along the handle. To the inside is a Bristol blue glass liner that
appears to be original as it is heavy with a thick gauge (n.b. it sits
slightly high). The silver is superbly pierced and engraved around the top
edge and base - the detail is incredible and the quality top class.
The
basket was made by William Plummer who was a specialist in the field of
pierced wares (his output almost entirely consisted of cake and
sugar baskets, cream pails and strainers) and as such was the finest
exponent of hand saw-cut items from the middle 18th Century. This
basket is a fine example of his work.
This
is a large basket that would originally have been intended to
hold sugar, however it's large size would these days allow it's uses
to be extended to all manner of functions; sweets, pot pourri, table
centrepiece etc..
