Item: Table Spoon Description: Hanoverian pattern
Hallmark: Cork circa 1730 by William Clarke Dimensions:
201 mm long; 61g weight
Comments: An exceptionally rare and very early
piece of Irish provincial silver. According to "Irish
Silver" by Bennett and O'Brien's "Cork Silver", William
Clarke was working in Cork until 1733. This spoon bears two clear examples
of his curly "WC" maker's mark and the form of the spoon with
it's strong double drop heel and central ridge down the front of the
handle is consistent with that time frame.
The spoon has a really good feel in the hand with a full
bowl and fine patina. There are some late 18th Century script engraved
initials to the reverse terminal.
Cork silver from pre-1780 is especially rare and this
spoon is significantly earlier than that dateline.
