Antique Silver

Item: Caddy Spoon Description: Bead punched bowl  Hallmark: Dublin (Cork) 1966 by William Egan & Sons  Dimensions: 77mm; 18 grams

Comments: This very rare Irish caddy spoon was made in the provincial city of Cork. It has an attractive and discreetly engraved handle with shell bowl and punch bead decoration. The spoon has a good weight in the hand and is of fine all round quality.

The spoon displays a clear example of the "Sword of Light"   (An Cladheamh Solais) commemorative mark that was stamped on silver  made during 1966. This mark celebrated the Golden jubilee of the rising of 1916. The firm of Egan's were very pro Republican in their politics and produced their own independently marked Commonwealth silver following the 1916 rising.
