Item: Marrow Fork Description: Dessert Fork
proportions
Hallmark: London circa 1750 Dimensions: 167mm long,
27g weight
Comments: A very rare form of marrow scoop.
This is the first marrow fork that we have seen in many years and it is is
a very fine example. The condition is excellent with full and equal length
tines.
An additional point of interest are the duty dodger
hallmarks. Small items of this period only required 2 marks (should be
lion passant and maker's mark) however to avoid paying duties and assay
fees silversmiths would stamp the maker's mark twice and then close over
the marks to make them difficult to read. This is the case for this fork,
however the marks can still be read and are either "TI" or
"II" or "IT" in script.
