Antique Silver Spoons

Item: Medicine Spoon Description: Gibson's Patent Hallmark: London 1827 by Charles Gibson Dimensions: 139mm long; 37g weight

Comments: An early example of a rare Gibson's Patent spoon. The spoon has a hollow handle to allow the user to control the quantity of medicine consumed by placing a finger over the aperture. This form of spoon was invented in 1827 and is engraved thus around the collar on the handle "C Gibson Inventor 1 Bishopsgate St Wethian". The hinge is in fine condition, although there are some minor dings to the handle and bowl. The two sets of hallmarks from the first year of it's manufacture are very clear .

An identical spoon is illustrated in "Silver Flatware" by Ian Pickford on page 208 figure 379.
