Item: Runcible Spoon Description: Bead
pattern Hallmark: London 1861 by Thomas Smily Dimensions: 140mm long; 30g weight
Comments: A fine example of a Victorian
runcible spoon in double-struck Bead pattern. The spoon benefits from
having neither engravings nor erasures to the front terminal. Ideal for
chutneys and pickles.
The runcible spoon appears in two works by Edward Lear:
The Owl & The Pussy Cat ("They dined on mince and slices of
quince, which they ate with a runcible spoon") and Twenty-Six
Nonsense Rhymes and Pictures ("The Dolomphious Duck, who caught
Spotted Frogs for her dinner with a Runcible Spoon").
