Item: Dog's Collar Description: "R Miller, Newhall
Street" Hallmark: Birmingham
1906 by Grey & Co. Dimensions: 430mm long, 103g weight Comments: A
very rare dog collar made from fully hallmarked silver. Each link in this
collar is appropriately marked and the clasp has five settings. There is a
D-shaped ring for connecting to a leash. The central link is engraved with
the name and address of the dog's owner "R Miller, 3 Newhall
Street Birmingham".
Newhall Street is in the heart of Birmingham's Jewellery
Quarter and was the home of Elkington & Company and remains the
address for the Birmingham Assay Office. The dog may well have belonged to
the owner of an Edwardian silversmithing establishment or judging by the
length of the collar (maximum neck circumference of 15") this may
even have belonged to a guard dog!
