Item: Candlesnuffers & Tray Description: Openwork
handles & sprung firebox Hallmark:
London 1808 by Wilkes Booth Dimensions: Stand: 248mm x 98mm;
Snuffers: 122mm long Comments: This is a fine
pair of Georgian silver handled candlesnuffers (aka wick trimmers) on it's
original Old Sheffield Plate tray. The tray is superbly engraved with a
Coat-of-Arms and the snuffers bears the matching engraved crest of a lion
rampant. The condition is superb throughout with a desirable amount of
copper bleeding to the underside edges of the tray.
The steel firebox/wick trimmer has a superb patent spring
action box that close with a resounding snap. Unusually it has a locking
facility, so that the snuffers can be left in the open position allowing
it to be accurately placed over the lit candle. The blade, which rises as
the box opens, cuts the wick as it falls and the box extinguishes the
flame. The pointed end of the tool can be used to dig out the wick from
the solidified wax prior to it being re-lit. Wilkes Booth was the finest
specialist maker of this essential Georgian lighting accessory.
