Item: Mote Spoon Description: Crosslet
and fleur-de-lys pierced with additional engraved design Hallmark: London
circa 1745 by James Wilks Dimensions: 152mm long;
Comments: A superior quality mote spoon by one
of the finest makers of this type of spoon. Wilks must have either had
great skills of piercing or employed somebody with these skills as the
majority of his mote spoons are finely worked and this spoon is an exemplary
example of the art. In addition, the reverse of the bowl has engraved
flourishes, the edge is line engraved and a contemporary betrothal
triangle is located to the heel (very rare for mote spoons). The maker's
marks (JW in script) are clear and struck twice.
