Antique Silver

Item:  Straining Spoon Description: Hanoverian Scroll Back Hallmark: London 1767 by Philip Roker Dimensions: 210mm long; 57 grams weight

Comments: This is a beautiful early George III period table spoon. It is the standard size for a Hanoverian scroll back table spoon. The piercing is typical of mote spoons dating from the mid-18th century. It is possible that the piercing is later, but there is also every chance that the spoon was originally adorned in this way. Either way, the pierced spoon's probable use would have been as a church strainer spoon (for removing motes from the communion wine).

The condition is excellent with a full bowl, crisp scroll to the reverse of the bowl and a clear set of hallmarks. The makers' mark is unusually stamped in full as "P.Roker" - an important mid-18th century specialist spoon maker. A fine quality, rare spoon.
