Antique Silver

Item: Mote Spoon Description: Shell-back Hallmark: London circa 1738 by John Mackferlan Dimensions: 129mm

Comments: A fine example of an early fancy back mote spoon. This spoon has a rudimentary shell to the reverse of the bowl - typical of circa 1740. The maker's mark for John Mackferlan was registered between 1734-38 and so gives an accurate date of manufacture. The bowl is beautifully pierced with scrolls and crosslets and also bears a contemporary initial "A".
