Item: Spoon Holder Description: 'Penny Farthing' Hallmark: London
1893 by Aaron Katz Dimensions: 142mm tall; 135mm long; 230g
weight
Comments: This is an
extremely rare novelty Victorian silver teaspoon carrier or coaster in the
form of a Penny Farthing cycle. This table novelty would have been an
afternoon tea or after-dinner amusement for passing teaspoons around
the table. The three wheels revolve and the six spoons hang from specially
made cut-outs in the seat and either sit in holes within the pedals or
hang loose from their angel finials. The spoons are all original
(bearing the same hallmarks to the carrier) and have small square
sections in the centre of their twisted stems to enable them to fit in and
out.
The
Penny Farthing is an iconic symbol of late Victorian life and was the
first true bicycle. It was a tall, three wheeled form of transportation
that became popular very quickly. The pedals were located in the
centre of the large front wheel and it was this wheel that propelled the
cycle. The cycle was named after two English coins; the large
penny coin and the small farthing coin (five farthings made up a penny).
The silver model being offered is a faithful copy.
This
type of fun novelty silver is in high demand today and represent
extremely good investments.
