Item: Salt Spoon Description: Goddess of Love with
Shell Bowl Hallmark: London
1880 by Francis Higgins Dimensions: 115mm long; 23g weight
Comments: A magnificent silver-gilt spoon by
one of the finest maker's of the period. The terminal of the handle shows
a fine openwork representation of a Goddess, probably Aphrodite/Venus,
further weight is lent to the Goddess of Love theory by the presence of a
heart motif to the reverse side of the handle. Two nymphs can be found to
the base of the front stem and the bowl is a finely worked shell. The
spoon is gilt (gold-wash) all over as a statement of opulence and also to
protect the silver from the corrosive effects of salt. A top quality
piece.
