Item: Caddy Spoon Description: Bright-cut
handle and fluted bowl Hallmark: Birmingham 1797 (double duty)
by Joseph Taylor Dimensions: 70mm long
Comments: A pretty spoon with the added bonus
of a clear example of the sought after double duty mark.
Double duty was imposed on silver in 1797 to aid payment
for the Napoleonic Wars. In order to show the items on which the extra
payment had been made, the assay offices stamped appropriate wares twice
with the duty mark.
