Antique Silver

Item: Pair of Strainer Spoons Description: Bead pattern Hallmark: London 1776 by George Smith Dimensions: 288mm long; 220 grams

Comments: An extremely rare pair of Georgian strainer spoons in wonderful condition. This form of vegetable strainer spoon is the same length as a contemporary basting or stuffing spoon and are dual purpose in that the strainers are detachable (also allows for easier cleaning). The bowls have a cut-out along one side where the strainer, that covers half of the bowl, can be clipped in to place (bowl end first then a push down with the thumb secures it in place). The bead decoration and engraved initials remain very crisp. Another interesting aspect with these spoons are the duty dodger hallmarks to one spoon (a clear maker's marks accompanied by three purposefully squashed in marks to avoid assaying fees). A very fine pair of spoons.
