Item: Ribbon Threaders/Umbilical Clamp Description:
Stork Hallmark: London 1811 by William Eley &
William Fearn Dimensions: 102mm long
Comments: A very rare silver-gilt example of a
highly sought after pair of Georgian ribbon threaders. These ribbon
pullers are
realistically modelled as a stork standing on a four clawed foot. The beak
has a corrugated interior to improve grip. The hallmarks are spread
between the two finger grips. The condition is excellent throughout.
This form of tong is most commonly found in Germany and
Holland where they are known as luiertang. Their use is thought to have
been either for use by midwives for clamping the umbilical cord of a
newborn or for picking up nappies!
