Caddy Spoon - Bacchanalian Pattern - London 1881 by Henry Lias & James Wakely - 11.4cm long; 33g - OX/5019

This is a fabulous quality antique silver-gilt caddy spoon in the stunning Bacchanalian pattern.

Both sides of this Victorian caddy spoon are decoration in relief. The front has a classical wine scene of happy semi-clad revellers drinking wine and celebrating the festival of Bacchus within a garden landscape. The reverse side is further decorated with wine related objects and trophies. What stands this caddy spoon out from most examples is the clever way that the raised figures are picked out in silver to stand out against the gilt background.

The spoon has a fluted bowl and is in excellent condition. The gilding is generally fine too with just a touch of wear to the reverse handle terminal.

Bacchanalian pattern was originally designed during the Regency period by Paul Storr for Rundell, Bridge & Rundell.
