This is a fabulous example of a William III period 1/2 pint silver mug.

Dating from the final year of the 17th century, this mug is engraved to the underside of the base with contemporary engraved dated initials - "S*B 1701". The Britannia Standard silver hallmarks are clearly struck by the handle with a crisp date letter and a "S.P" over a bird maker's mark - this mark is not shown in Grimwade, however William Spackman had a similar mark entered in 1714 whilst his brothers (or cousins) John and Thomas Spackman were already working in London at the time this mug was made.

This handsome silver mug has the major bonus of being in fine condition - the untidy solder to the underside of the foot is typical of how unseen areas were left unfinished at this period. The crest to the body is likely to date from later in the 18th century. A great piece!
