Antique Silver Spoons

A Video Guide to Collecting Silver"

A new and exciting way to understand the key facts about silver collecting. The dvd expertly covers two important subject matters that are difficult to explain in purely written text and illustrations; hallmarks and silversmithing techniques. The 58 minute dvd will appeal to both beginners and the more advanced collector. It uses a clever combination of close-up photography and computer animation and is divided into three chapters.

Chapter One - History of hallmarking and how to interpret each element of a hallmark. Each component of a hallmark is identified and discussed in detail. This will prove useful to the beginner who is having difficulty understanding a hallmark guidebook and the collector in learning more about the history of hallmarking.

Chapter Two - The twelve main techniques used by silversmiths to make and decorate their work. The more advanced collector will thoroughly enjoy this chapter as it comprehensively covers the main silver manufacturing methods. It will help the viewer to understand the difference between certain construction methods (e.g. raising and seaming) and decorating methods (e.g. engraving, repousse and chasing). Of particular interest is the close-up footage of a silversmith employing the twelve processes, which is something that cannot be replicated in book form.

Chapter Three - Brings together the knowledge gained in earlier chapters in the context of fine 18thC silverware. This chapter looks in detail at how particular items were constructed employing a combination of techniques discussed in chapter two and how to read their hallmarks.

I would highly recommend this dvd to all beginners and anybody interested in furthering their knowledge about the design and construction of a piece of silverware. We are pleased to be able to offer the DVD at a substantial reduction on the UK RRP - just £15.
