Item: Bougie Box Description: Bright-cut engraved with
hinged cover Hallmark: London
1792 by Susanna Barker Dimensions: 53mm diameter x 33mm tall;
54g weight Comments: A very fine example of a
Georgian silver bougie box. This box has additional features that other
similar boxes lack - secret hinge to top cover, bright-cut engraved
decoration and crisp lion crest - all are indicative of high quality. The
top cover has a spinning crescent for extinguishing the taper. The
condition is superb with a clear set of hallmarks and appropriate part
marks for this sought after lady silversmith.
A bougie box was a desk accoutrement for holding tapers to
melt sealing wax. They were used as an alternative to tapersticks and
wax jacks with the advantage of being portable.
