Item: Snuff Box Description: 'Newstead Abbey' Hallmark: Birmingham
1836 by Nathaniel Mills Dimensions: 72mm (w) x 44mm (d) x 12mm (h);
70g weight Comments: A fine example of one of
the most popular of castle tops. The low relief decoration is near perfect
and the rectangular cartouche to the underside is vacant (no erasures).
The interior retains it's original gilding and the underside of the cover
bears the following inscription: "Presented by John Foster to W.H.
Schofield as a token of affectionate regard".
Newstead Abbey
is in Nottinghamshire and was originally an Augustinian Priory before
becoming the ancestral home of the Byron family. The
most famous family member was the early 19th Century Romantic poet Lord
Byron. Byron died in 1824, whilst acting as a mercenary during the Greek
War of Independence, and Newstead Abbey became a site of pilgrimage for
his followers.
