Antique Silver

Item: Table Spoon Description: Hanoverian Shell Back Hallmark: London 1740 by Ebenezer Coker Dimensions: 197mm long, 52g weight

Comments: A text book example of a detached scallop shell fancy back spoon dating from exactly the year that one would associate with this style. The detail to the scallop shell is near pristine and the spoon itself is in fine condition. A contemporary to manufacture engraved betrothal triangle can be found to the reverse terminal ("H" over "IM" where H is the surname and the J and M are first names of the newly weds). The spoon was made by one of the finest and most important specialist spoon makers of the Georgian period and are clear example of his mark can be seen. The date letter is partly mis-struck, but is clearly an "e" and there is a good example of the 1739-56 lion passant mark. A fine spoon.
