Item: Sugar Tongs Description: Bright-cut
engraved, wavy-edge bow Hallmark: London circa 1780 by George
Smith (duty dodger) Dimensions: 130mm long; 27 grams Comments: A
very fine pair of Georgian tongs with some interesting features. The
attractively shaped bow has a vacant cartouche (no erasures) to the bow,
but instead the Roman block owners initials "M*B" can be found
to the inside of one arm. The GS markers mark is clearly struck to one arm
and part struck to the other, suggesting that George Smith did not send
the tongs for assay, but rather impersonated a poorly struck lion passant
with his maker's mark to avoid paying fees.
