Item: Sugar Tongs Description: Bright-cut engraved
with acorn bowls Hallmark: London
1790 by Peter & Jonathan Bateman Dimensions: 144mm long Comments: A
superb pair of bright-cut engraved sugar tongs by the very rarely found
and highly sought after mark belonging to the short-lived partnership of
Peter & Jonathan Bateman*. The engravings is very crisp, the bow is
free from engraved initials (no erasures) and the bowls are in the form of
acorns.
*The partnership of the two sons of Hester Bateman was
short-lived due to the untimely death of Jonathan. The marks were only in
use between 7th December 1790 and 2nd May 1791 and
therefore items bearing this rare mark are highly collectable.
