Item: Sugar Nips Description: Rectangular box
hinge with baluster arms and scallop grips Hallmark: Dublin circa 1735 Dimensions: 120mm long;30
grams Comments: A very rare and superb quality
pair of early Irish sugar nips. The nips bear both the crowned harp and
Hibernia marks (the latter's presence dating the piece to post 1731) to
the finger grips.
The central interlocking box hinge is exquisite and
shows meticulous attention to detail. The box is engraved with
contemporary to manufacture "IB" initials and late 18thC
"MM" script initials. The scallop shell grips are also superbly
made.
The condition is excellent with neither damage nor
repairs. A very similar pair of early Irish sugar nips are illustrated and
discussed in "Eighteenth Century Silver Tea Tongs" by Dr. David
Shlosberg on page 70.
