Antique Silver

Item: Sugar Nips Description: Scissor action with cast shell grips Hallmark: London circa 1735 Dimensions: 117mm long, 29g weight

Comments: A very fine pair of tea tongs in superb original condition with a tight central pivot. The bowls are especially unusual in having a shell motif to the outsides. Both bowls are stamped to the inside with a clear lion passant. In the absence of any other marks, these nips can be accurately dated from their form (the presence of the shell which is indicative of the circa 1740 period) and the shape of the lion passant punch (pre-1739). These sugar nips were almost certainly made in the late 1730's.
